Constipation Treatment

How Dulcolax works

Dulcolax offers consumers dependable overnight relief from constipation. Dulcolax has a two way mode of action; firstly it works by stimulating the natural movement of the bowel muscles, causing the bowel muscles to contract and move the stool. Secondly, it increases water accumulation in the bowel, making the stool softer.

Dulcolax is available in tablets, drops and suppositories. Simply take the tablets or drops at night before you go to bed and when you wake up in the morning you should be ready to go to the toilet. For fast relief, the suppositories are effective in 20-45 mins.

Fibre Supplements

They work by absorbing water in the colon, increasing bulk, which stimulates motion. Fibre supplements are slow acting, taking up to 3 days to have the full effect. Introducing such supplements into the diet too quickly and with inadequate water intake can even aggravate constipation. Therefore fibre is best used as maintenance therapy to prevent constipation rather than to treat acute constipation.

Osmotic Laxatives

They work by drawing water into the bowel from the surrounding tissue, increasing bulk and resulting in a softer stool and increased bowel action. Osmotic laxatives can take between 24-48 hours to work.

Stool Softners

They work by drawing fluid into the stools to make them softer and easier to pass without straining. They help you go rather than make you go. Stool softeners take between 1-3 days to work on average.

IMPORTANT: IF YOU HAVE A FEVER OR EXTREME PAIN, SEE A DOCTOR AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.
